The killing of 63 people in Borno State has sparked outrage across Nigeria and beyond, with strong calls for a thorough investigation into the incident. The United Nations, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party leader Peter Obi, and Senator Ali Ndume have all condemned the attack, urging the Federal Government to act decisively.

According to reports, the victims were ambushed by suspected insurgents while returning from their farmlands in Monguno Local Government Area, a region already devastated by years of Boko Haram and ISWAP violence. Survivors described the assault as brutal, saying the attackers targeted unarmed villagers in what they called a massacre.

The UN, in a statement, expressed deep concern over the rising insecurity in the North-East and called on Nigerian authorities to prioritize the protection of civilians. Atiku and Obi both described the killings as a stain on the nation’s conscience, insisting that government must not allow such atrocities to continue unchecked. Senator Ndume, who represents Borno South, demanded immediate military action, warning that continued neglect could further embolden insurgents.

The Federal Government has yet to issue a detailed response, but security agencies have been placed on alert. For many in Borno, however, the grief is raw, and the demand is simple: justice for the dead and safety for the living.
