UN Warns of Worsening Hunger Crisis in Nigeria

The United Nations has raised alarm over a deepening hunger crisis in Nigeria, warning that nearly 31 million people could face severe food insecurity in the coming months. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the situation has been worsened by conflict in the north, climate related disasters, and rising food prices. Funding shortages have also crippled aid efforts, leaving over 1.3 million Nigerians at risk of losing access to lifesaving food support.

Humanitarian groups say the hardest hit areas include parts of Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states, where insurgency has displaced thousands of farming families. In the north-central and north-west, persistent bandit attacks have disrupted agricultural activities, further reducing food availability. The UN is appealing for urgent international assistance, stressing that without swift action, the crisis could lead to widespread malnutrition, especially among children under five, and deepen the country’s already fragile humanitarian situation.
