US Condoles With Nigeria Over Imam’s Death

The United States Mission in Nigeria has expressed deep condolences to the family and loved ones of Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, the renowned Chief Imam of Nghar village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, who passed away on January 15, 2026, at the age of 90.
The Mission in a statement described Imam Abubakar a courageous champion of religious tolerance and interfaith dialogue, with a distinguished record of building bridges across religious communities throughout his life.
In recognition of his extraordinary bravery and commitment to religious freedom, the U.S. Department of State awarded him the International Religious Freedom Award in 2019.
Imam Abubakar’s selfless actions exemplified humanity, interfaith harmony, and peaceful coexistence.
The US mission said the late Imam legacy of compassion, acceptance, and unity will continue to inspire Nigerians and Americans alike.
