The United States government has issued a stern warning that Nigerians and other foreign nationals who post inflammatory or celebratory comments about the murder of American conservative activist Charlie Kirk risk being denied US visas.

According to reports, the warning followed a wave of online reactions to Kirk’s killing, with some foreign social media users making derogatory remarks or appearing to justify the attack. US authorities described such conduct as “unacceptable” and linked it to broader concerns about the spread of hate speech and extremism online.

Officials said visa applicants found to have engaged in such posts could be flagged during background checks and deemed ineligible for entry into the United States. The government emphasized that freedom of speech does not extend to incitement or expressions that appear to endorse violence.

The development has sparked debate in Nigeria, where rights advocates argue that punishing people for online comments could be excessive. However, security analysts note that the move underscores Washington’s resolve to deter extremist rhetoric and protect public figures.

Meanwhile, the US reiterated its commitment to working with international partners to curb online hate and misinformation.
