Woman Faces Murder Charge for Using Abortion Pills to Terminate Her Pregnancy
By Micheal Chukwuebuka
A 31-year-old woman in the U.S. state of Georgia has been charged with murder after police alleged she used medication to terminate a pregnancy beyond the legal limit.
Authorities say Alexia Moore could become one of the first women prosecuted under Georgia’s strict abortion law passed in 2019, which bans most abortion once embryonic cardiac activity is detected, typically around six weeks.
According to an arrest warrant, medical staff determined Moore was past that stage, noting the fetus had a detectable heartbeat. Court records state she arrived at a hospital on December 30 complaining of abdominal pain and told doctors she had taken misoprostol, commonly used for medication abortions, along with oxycodone.
Investigators claim the fetus survived for about an hour after delivery at the hospital.
Police further alleged that Moore made a disturbing statement to medical staff, admitting she carried out the abortion herself.
Moore was arrested in Kingsland, roughly 100 miles south of Savannah, and has remained in custody in Camden County since March 4. She faces charges of murder and illegal drug possession.
Her case has sparked controversy, with advocacy group Pregnancy Justice describing it as “unprecedented,” warning that criminalizing abortion could set a far-reaching legal precedent.
