A prominent Ijaw youth leader Mingo Meshach Ogumaka has urged Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori to immortalize Chief Edwin Clark with special recognition of public holidays on Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th May 2025.

He said with a strong show of solidarity he was backing the call by Senior Comrade Ganagana Francis, President of the Ijaw Community Asaba and Coordinator of the Parliament of Human Rights (PHR), to honor the late High Chief Pa Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, Esq with public holidays.

Congress learnt that the call was to facilitate unrestricted attendance of stakeholders and dignitaries at the funeral rites of the late Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) Leader and Elder Statesman.

The late Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, a respected icon of the Niger Delta, was a towering figure in the struggle for the rights and development of the region. His contributions as a leader, elder statesman, and advocate for justice and equity earned him the admiration of many, making his funeral a pivotal event for stakeholders across the Niger Delta and Nigeria at large.

Mingo made the call during the burial ceremony of the late Barrister Onaidigha Destiny Perewari, held at Ajakurama Town, the traditional headquarters of Egbema Kingdom in Ovia South-West Local Government Area of Edo State. He expressed his deep respect for Chief Edwin Clark’s legacy, stating that his (Clark) life and works embodied the aspirations of the Niger Delta people.

While speaking, Mingo commended the President of the Niger Delta Community Projects Monitoring Organization (NDCPMO), Comrade Ganagana Francis, for his visionary and value-driven plea to the Delta State Government. He described the appeal to declare public holidays as a well-thought-out move to honor a man whose life epitomized service, leadership, and dedication to the development of the Niger Delta.

“Having a leader like Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark was truly a blessing to Delta State and the entire Niger Delta region. His immense contributions to peace, development, and the fight for justice cannot be overemphasized,” Mingo said. “By honoring him with a statewide public holiday, we are not just showing respect to his memory but also recognizing the ideals he stood for—a better, united, and prosperous Niger Delta.”

As the Treasurer of the Ijaw Publishers Forum, Comrade Mingo further stressed that Chief Clark’s life was a testament to the power of leadership rooted in vision, courage, and selflessness. He urged the Delta State Government to heed the call, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that all stakeholders, especially Niger Delta leaders and youths, can pay their final respects without hindrance.

The burial ceremony of Barrister Onaidigha Destiny Perewari served as a reflective moment for Mingo, who stated the interconnectedness of the struggles and aspirations of the Niger Delta people. He reiterated the need for unity among Ijaw leaders and youth to continue the work left behind by Chief Clark and other icons of the region.

“The late Chief Edwin Clark has left a legacy that we, the younger generation, must uphold,” he added. “This is a clarion call for all Niger Delta leaders and stakeholders to work together for the collective good of our people.
