Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, the governor of Borno State, has approved a special training fund for 56 medical doctors undergoing residency programs under the state’s sponsorship, in a move aimed at strengthening the region’s healthcare workforce.

The approval was granted during an interactive meeting with the resident doctors at the Government House in Maiduguri on Thursday. The session, convened at the governor’s instance, focused on reviewing the progress of their specialist training and identifying challenges affecting their professional development across various medical institutions.

Beyond the training fund, Mr. Zulum authorized the immediate implementation of promotional benefits for resident doctors eligible for career advancement. He directed that the promotions take effect without delay and that all outstanding arrears be paid from the official dates of eligibility.

The governor also instructed the Borno State Hospital Management Board to organize a similar engagement with medical doctors who are not currently in residency training, signaling a broader review of welfare conditions within the state’s health sector.

“The welfare of our health workers remains a top priority,” Mr. Zulum said at the meeting. “Without their dedication and commitment, we cannot achieve the level of healthcare coverage our citizens deserve.” Senior health officials, including the state’s commissioner for health and chief medical directors of key public institutions, attended the meeting.
