NNPC Raises Petrol to ₦955 in Abuja, ₦915 in Lagos

By Diafa Doubra,
In a move that has sparked widespread concern, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has officially increased the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, across the country.
As of Tuesday morning, the new prices stand at ₦955 per litre in Abuja and ₦915 per litre in Lagos. The hike comes amid growing pressure on Nigeria’s foreign exchange market and persistent global crude oil fluctuations.
NNPC sources say the adjustment was necessary to reflect the current landing cost and to sustain fuel supply nationwide. However, the development has triggered backlash from citizens, civil society groups, and labor unions, who argue that the increase will further deepen the country’s economic hardship, especially for low-income earners.
Transport fares, food prices, and cost of basic goods are already on the rise in major cities, with many Nigerians expressing frustration on social media over the timing of the increase.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has called for an emergency meeting to deliberate on possible responses, including a mass protest.
This marks the third major increase in petrol price since the removal of subsidy in 2023 a policy that continues to polarize national opinion.
