By Diafa Doubra,
The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Monday, August 12, 2025, a public holiday to mark the Islamic New Year, also known as Hijrah 1447 AH. The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.
In the statement, the Minister congratulated Muslims across the country for witnessing the beginning of a new Islamic year and urged them to use the opportunity to pray for the peace, progress, and unity of Nigeria. He emphasized that the holiday serves as a time for spiritual reflection and national renewal, especially as the country works to overcome economic and security challenges.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo called on all Nigerians regardless of religion to imbibe the virtues of peace, love, tolerance, and perseverance as taught by Prophet Muhammad. He also reassured citizens of the government’s ongoing commitment to fostering religious harmony and strengthening national cohesion.
The Islamic New Year is based on the lunar Hijri calendar and marks the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina, a pivotal moment in Islamic history. The declaration of the holiday has been welcomed by many Muslim faithful, with mosques and Islamic groups preparing for special prayers and lectures to commemorate the occasion.
