Nigeria’s sugar import bill has surged dramatically, rising by 328% between 2020 and 2024, according to new industry data. The increase highlights the country’s continued dependence on foreign sugar despite the government’s National Sugar Master Plan, which was designed to achieve self sufficiency and stimulate local production.

Industry experts blame the spike on inadequate investment in local refineries, poor infrastructure, and inconsistent government policies. Farmers also face challenges such as high production costs and limited access to credit. Stakeholders warn that without urgent reforms and stronger incentives for local producers, Nigeria will remain vulnerable to global price fluctuations and foreign supply shocks.
