Delta Government Empowers 10,000 widows with monthly stipends

By Diafa Doubra,
The Delta State Government has introduced a major empowerment programme targeted at widows across the state, with at least 10,000 beneficiaries already captured in the scheme. As part of the initiative, the widows will receive monthly stipends from the government to help cushion the economic challenges many of them face and to give them a stronger sense of stability.
According to the state authorities, this intervention is not just about providing financial assistance but also about ensuring that widows, who are often left vulnerable after the loss of their spouses, are not neglected in society. The stipends are expected to serve as a form of social security that will help them meet basic needs, while also creating opportunities for them to engage in small-scale businesses and other livelihood activities.
Government officials explained that the programme is in line with Delta State’s broader social welfare agenda, which focuses on supporting vulnerable groups, promoting inclusive growth, and reducing poverty. By extending this form of assistance, the state hopes to empower widows, restore their dignity, and create a more supportive environment for them and their families.
The initiative has been widely welcomed by many stakeholders, with social advocates describing it as a practical step towards improving the welfare of marginalized groups. For the beneficiaries, the scheme represents more than just financial aid it is also a sign that their struggles are being recognized and addressed by the government.
