Nigeria’s Dantsoho Elected Vice-President of Global Ports Body

By Diafa Doubra,
Nigeria has recorded another milestone in the maritime sector as the Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho, has been elected Vice-President (Africa) of the International Association for Ports and Harbours (IAPH).
The announcement was made during the association’s global meeting, where delegates from over 80 countries converged to discuss innovations, sustainability, and the future of port operations worldwide. Dantsoho’s election places Nigeria at the heart of international port management and policy, a position industry experts say could open new doors for investment and knowledge sharing.
Reacting to the development, Dantsoho described the appointment as “a victory for Nigeria and Africa at large,” pledging to use the platform to push for better collaboration, sustainable port development, and improved technology adoption across African ports. He stressed that efficient port operations are critical to boosting trade, reducing costs, and enhancing Africa’s competitiveness in the global economy.
The International Association for Ports and Harbours (IAPH), founded in 1955, is a non-governmental organization that represents the world’s ports, promoting cooperation and sharing best practices. With Dantsoho’s new role, Nigeria will now have a stronger voice in shaping policies that affect global shipping and maritime logistics.
Industry stakeholders back home have welcomed the news, noting that it underscores the recognition of Nigeria’s growing influence in maritime affairs. They believe the appointment could also help fast-track long-standing reforms in the nation’s ports sector, especially around automation, efficiency, and security.
For many, Dantsoho’s rise to this international position is not only a personal achievement but also a boost to Nigeria’s image in global maritime circles.
