Petrol Consumption Falls by 28% as Nigerians Cut Back on Fuel Use

By Diafa Doubra,
Petrol consumption across Nigeria has dropped by about 28 percent, leaving many filling stations struggling with idle attendants and reduced activity. According to reports, the decline is linked to the sharp rise in pump prices following the removal of fuel subsidy, which has forced many motorists and transporters to cut back on usage. Industry stakeholders say the reduction in demand is more evident in urban areas, where commercial drivers and private car owners now limit their movements to essential trips only.
The situation has raised fresh concerns about the state of the downstream sector, with some marketers warning that if the trend continues, it could affect jobs and overall economic activities tied to fuel sales. While the Federal Government insists the subsidy removal was necessary to stabilize the economy, the drop in consumption highlights the growing financial pressure on Nigerians already battling inflation and high living costs.
