Gov. Yusuf Moves to Ban Same-Sex Marriage, Immoral Practices in Kano

By Diafa Doubra,
Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced plans to introduce a new law that would prohibit same-sex marriages and other practices considered immoral under the state’s cultural and religious values.
According to the governor, the decision aligns with Kano’s long-standing commitment to upholding Islamic principles and safeguarding the moral fabric of society. He explained that the proposed legislation would strengthen existing laws on marriage, sexuality, and public conduct, while also giving authorities broader powers to enforce compliance.
Governor Yusuf emphasized that the measure is aimed at protecting the state’s traditions and youth from what he described as “foreign influences” that threaten cultural and religious norms. He also urged community and religious leaders to support the initiative, noting that it reflects the wishes of the majority of Kano residents.
The announcement has already sparked debate, with rights advocates warning that such laws could deepen discrimination against vulnerable groups. However, Yusuf insisted that his administration’s priority remains the preservation of morality, peace, and order in Kano State.
