By Diafa Doubra,
A combined security operation in Delta State has led to the neutralization of two suspected kidnappers and the recovery of an AK-47 rifle along with live ammunition.
The operation, which was carried out by operatives of the Delta State Police Command in synergy with Operation Delta Sweep, took place on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, following credible intelligence about the presence of suspected kidnappers in the Owa-Ekei Boji Boji Owa axis of Ika North East Local Government Area.
According to the police, at about 11:00 a.m., the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Owa-Oyibu Division received information that a gang of kidnappers had been sighted around Nniogbo Owa Ekei Boji Boji Owa. Acting swiftly, the DPO mobilized a joint team comprising police operatives, local vigilantes, and two units of Operation Delta Sweep to the location.
On sighting the security teams, the suspects reportedly opened fire, prompting a fierce gun battle. In the exchange, two of the suspected kidnappers sustained serious gunshot injuries. They were rushed to the Owa-Alero General Hospital, where doctors later confirmed them dead.
Items recovered from the suspects include one AK-47 rifle, two magazines, and 40 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the development in a statement, describing it as another major stride in the command’s fight against kidnapping and other violent crimes in the state. He added that a manhunt has already been launched for the fleeing members of the gang.
The Delta State Police Command urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to aid security agencies in sustaining the fight against criminal elements.
