Nigeria is set to host Africa’s first locally produced insulin manufacturing facility, following a landmark partnership agreement between the Nigerian government and the Chinese government. The initiative aims to improve access to affordable diabetes medication and strengthen Nigeria’s pharmaceutical capacity.

According to a statement released after a bilateral meeting in Abuja, the plant will be established under a China–Nigeria health cooperation framework. The facility is expected to reduce the country’s dependence on imported insulin, which has long contributed to high treatment costs for diabetic patients.

Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, described the development as “a major breakthrough” in Nigeria’s healthcare advancement, noting that the project aligns with the government’s drive to promote local drug production. He added that the insulin plant would not only serve Nigeria but also supply other African countries in the near future.

Chinese officials reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Nigeria’s health and industrial growth, emphasizing that the partnership reflects China’s dedication to improving healthcare outcomes across Africa.
