Cooking Gas Prices Soar to ₦25,000 as Shortage Worsens Across Nigeria

By Diafa Doubra,
Nigerian households are facing renewed hardship as the price of cooking gas, also known as Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), has surged to as high as ₦25,000 for a 12.5kg cylinder in several cities across the country.
According to market surveys, the latest price hike is linked to supply shortages, rising foreign exchange rates, and logistical challenges affecting importation and distribution. The situation has forced many families to revert to firewood and charcoal for cooking — a move experts warn could worsen deforestation and health problems.
Traders in Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt said gas depots are struggling to meet demand as suppliers blame the scarcity on high import costs and dollar scarcity. “Last week, we bought at ₦1,900 per kilogram, but today it’s ₦2,000. Customers are complaining, but there’s nothing we can do,” said a gas dealer in Ikeja.
The Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM) confirmed that the situation may persist if the federal government does not intervene urgently. The association appealed for the stabilization of foreign exchange and the removal of bottlenecks hindering local gas production and distribution.
Meanwhile, consumers have taken to social media to lament the unbearable cost of cooking, with many calling on the government to address the crisis before it escalates further.
Experts warn that if left unchecked, the cooking gas shortage could drive inflation higher and further strain household incomes already battered by rising fuel prices and food costs.
