‎Waidi Shaibu, a dedicated officer of the Nigerian Army, has earned praise for his courage and commitment during years of service in the conflict-torn northeast.

‎Serving in Maiduguri, the epicentre of Nigeria’s fight against insurgency, Shaibu has been described by colleagues as “gallant and selfless,” working tirelessly to protect civilians and support his comrades in difficult conditions.

‎Born and raised in southern Nigeria, Shaibu joined the Nigerian Army with a deep sense of duty and patriotism. He says his decision was inspired by a desire to defend the country and contribute to peace efforts at a time when insecurity was spreading across the northeast.

‎Since his deployment to Borno State, Shaibu has participated in several key counter-insurgency operations against extremist groups. His unit often patrols remote communities, providing security and supporting humanitarian missions for displaced residents.

‎“He is the kind of soldier who never backs down,” said a colleague who requested anonymity for security reasons. “Even in the most difficult moments, he motivates others and puts the mission first.”

‎The harsh realities of service in Maiduguri where attacks and ambushes remain a threat have tested Shaibu’s resilience. Yet he continues to perform his duties with composure and resolve, balancing the strain of military life with moments of reflection and faith.

‎For Shaibu, the battle is not only about defeating insurgents but also about restoring hope to people caught in the conflict. “When you see children going back to school and farmers returning to their land, you know the sacrifice is worth it,” he told AFP during a brief interview at a military base on the outskirts of Maiduguri.

‎His superiors say Shaibu’s professionalism and discipline set him apart. He has received commendations for leadership and bravery, though he remains modest about his achievements. “It’s a team effort,” he said. “No soldier stands alone.”

‎Beyond the battlefield, Shaibu is known for mentoring younger soldiers, often reminding them that their mission is not only to fight but to serve. “He tells us to always remember why we wear the uniform,” said one junior officer.

‎As Nigeria continues its long struggle to end the insurgency, figures like Waidi Shaibu embody the courage and dedication that keep hope alive in the region a reminder that even in times of war, the spirit of service endures.
