PDP Crisis Deepens as Damagum’s Camp Accuses Defectors of Betrayal, Faults Court Rulings
By Diafa Doubra,
The leadership tussle within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took a new turn on Monday as loyalists of the embattled Acting National Chairman, Amb. Umar Damagum, accused some defectors of betraying the party for personal gain.
Reacting to recent defections and a series of court rulings affecting the party’s structure, Damagum’s camp alleged that certain members had “sold out” to external political interests determined to destabilize the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Party insiders said the crisis deepened following conflicting judgments over the legitimacy of the party’s National Working Committee, sparking confusion among stakeholders.
According to sources within Wadata Plaza, the Damagum faction insists it remains the authentic leadership of the PDP and will not bow to pressure from political forces seeking to hijack the party.
Meanwhile, some elders of the party have called for urgent reconciliation talks to prevent further division, warning that continued infighting could weaken the PDP’s position as the country’s leading opposition ahead of upcoming elections.
