Wike’s Public Outburst Sparks Fresh Criticism Over Leadership Style
By Diafa Doubra, Warri.
A fiery opinion piece has intensified public debate over the conduct of Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike following his widely circulated confrontation with a naval officer at a disputed land site in Abuja. The writer, Bayo Oluwasanmi, argued that Wike’s behaviour reflects a pattern of excessive arrogance and entitlement, warning that such displays undermine democratic values and set a dangerous example for public office holders. His comments follow a week of public backlash over the minister’s tone and approach during the altercation.
In the article, Oluwasanmi stressed that the incident exposes a broader cultural problem in Nigeria where political leaders often demand unquestioned obedience from citizens and security personnel. He described this mindset as corrosive, noting that democracy cannot thrive when public servants act as though they are above scrutiny. The altercation, which went viral, has triggered renewed calls for accountability and restraint among top government officials, especially in sensitive situations involving security agencies.
The writer also predicted that the public’s tolerance for what he called Wike’s “inflated self-importance” will eventually fade, especially as Nigerians become increasingly vocal about governance and leadership ethics. Commentators across the country have echoed similar sentiments, urging the federal government to set clearer behavioural standards for political appointees. The article has since gained widespread attention, adding pressure on the minister to address growing concerns about his leadership style.
