Nigeria Unite Appeals to U.S. Senate Over Alleged Democratic Collapse, Seeks Sanctions
By Diafa Doubra, Warri.
The civil society group Nigeria Unite has formally petitioned the U.S. Senate, raising concerns about what it describes as a “systematic collapse of democracy” in Nigeria. In its submission, the organisation accused key political figures, including FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and certain compromised judges, of undermining political freedoms and engaging in actions that facilitate impunity. The petition underscores increasing international attention on governance and the rule of law in Nigeria.
According to the organisation, Wike and other implicated officials have allegedly used state mechanisms to intimidate opponents, manipulate electoral outcomes, and obstruct justice. Nigeria Unite urged the U.S. Senate to consider imposing sanctions on these individuals, arguing that external pressure could help restore democratic norms and accountability. The petition also highlighted the broader risk posed to civil liberties and citizen participation when political leaders act unchecked.
The move by Nigeria Unite has generated reactions from activists and political commentators, many of whom see the appeal as a wake-up call for both national and international stakeholders. Analysts suggest that while the Nigerian government may dismiss the petition, such appeals signal growing frustration among citizens and civic groups, emphasizing the need for transparent governance and adherence to democratic principles.
