Senate President Godswill Akpabio has come under public scrutiny following his reaction to the recent abduction of 25 school girls in Kebbi State. Speaking to journalists, Akpabio described the incident as “unfortunate” but added that “there is no society without crime,” a comment many Nigerians felt downplayed the severity of the growing insecurity affecting schools across the North-West. His remarks sparked debate, with critics insisting that such statements fail to acknowledge the urgency of protecting students from recurring attacks.

Akpabio later clarified that his intention was not to trivialize the tragedy but to emphasise the need for stronger security measures at vulnerable learning institutions. He called on security agencies to intensify intelligence operations and ensure the safe rescue of the abducted students. The Senate President also urged communities to support ongoing investigations by providing credible information that could assist in tracking the kidnappers.

The Kebbi incident has once again highlighted the persistent threat faced by school children in northern Nigeria, where banditry and insurgency have caused repeated disruptions to education. Advocacy groups have renewed demands for the federal government to prioritise school safety, warning that continued attacks may discourage parents from sending their children to school. As rescue efforts continue, families of the abducted girls are appealing for swift action to bring their daughters home safely.
