The House of Representatives has called on the Director General (DG) Department of State Security (DSS) and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to immediately arrest and prosecute all individuals involved in the ambush and killing of five police officers and injuring others in a community in Darazo local government area of Bauchi State in order to restore public confidence and deter future attacks.

It also called on the Inspector-General of Police to expedite the payment of statutory entitlements and insurance benefits and to ensure full medical care for the injured officers.

This followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance moved by the member representing Darazo/Ganjuwa federal Constituency of Bauchi State, Hon. Mansur Manu Soro at the Plenary on Tuesday.

Presenting the motion, the lawmaker recalled that, the police team was ambushed last Saturday at Sabon Sara village of Darazo Local Government Area during a security operation which led to the death of five police officers.

According to him, the deceased police officers include; DSP Ahmad Muhammad, ASP Mustapha Muhammad, Inspector Amarhel Yunusa, Inspector Idris Ahmed, and Corporal Isah Muazu—and caused varying degrees of injuries to Inspector Isah Musa and Inspector Yusuf Gambo.

Hon. Soro said, “Credible intelligence linking the attack to armed group resisting the arrest of the dethroned hamlet head of Sabon Sara village, whose actions pose a continued threat to security and community stability”.

He commended the government of Bauchi State under Governor Bala Mohammed, for its security strategies that keep Bauchi State free of banditry and other non-state actors over the last 6 years and indeed for its swift response to sabon sara attack.

The lawmaker noted that, the families of the deceased and injured officers now face severe emotional and economic hardship and require immediate attention.

According to him, demonstrating institutional support for officers killed or injured in the line of duty is essential for sustaining the morale and operational effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force.

The House commiserated with the families of the deceased and injured officers, the Nigeria Police Force, the government and people of Bauchi State – vide separate condolence letters.

It also urged the federal ministry of humanitarian affairs, the Police Trust Fund and the North East Development Commission (NEDC) to immediately provide palliative and welfare support to the affected families, including financial relief and educational support for the children of the fallen officers.

The House mandated it’s Committees on National Security and Police Affairs to interface with relevant security agencies to ensure compliance.

The members observed a minute of silence in honour of the fallen officers.
