By Chukwunonso Eric, Warri.
The Delta State Police Command on Tuesday continued activities marking the 2026 National Police Week with a walkathon aimed at promoting fitness, enhancing public safety awareness, and strengthening community presence.
The exercise, held in Asaba, commenced at the Delta Command Police Headquarters along Okpanam Road and terminated at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, covering an estimated 3.2 kilometres round trip. Officers and personnel of the Command participated in the event, while similar walkathons were simultaneously conducted across the state’s nine Area Commands.
According to the Command, the initiative was designed to reinforce the visibility of police personnel within communities and reassure residents of their accessibility and responsiveness in maintaining law and order. It also highlighted the physical fitness and operational readiness of officers.
Speaking during the event, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi John Oyeniyi, noted that the walkathon reflects the Command’s commitment to community-based policing. He added that the exercise aligns with the theme of this year’s National Police Week, “Community Partnership: Building Trust.”
Oyeniyi emphasized that the police remain within reach of the public at all times and urged residents to collaborate with law enforcement agencies in sustaining peace and security. He further encouraged citizens to report concerns and grievances, assuring that such matters would be addressed promptly and professionally.
The walkathon forms part of a broader series of engagements lined up for the National Police Week celebration across Delta State.
