The newly appointed 24th Commissioner of Police in Delta State, CP Yemi John Oyeniyi, has pledged to prioritize the safety of lives and property while introducing a more coordinated and intelligence-driven policing strategy across the state.

Speaking during his inaugural press briefing in Asaba, the state capital, Oyeniyi expressed gratitude to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for the confidence reposed in him to lead the Delta State Command. He emphasized his readiness to uphold the responsibilities of the office with diligence and commitment to lawful policing.

Describing Delta State as a critical economic hub with significant contributions to national development, the Commissioner noted that effective security architecture remains essential to sustaining its growth. He acknowledged the existing security challenges, including kidnapping, armed robbery, and cult-related activities, assuring residents of a proactive and strategic response.

Oyeniyi commended his predecessor, CP Aina Adesola, and the command’s management team for their contributions to strengthening policing efforts in the state. He affirmed his administration’s commitment to building on existing gains while addressing emerging threats with renewed focus.

He disclosed that, in line with directives from the Inspector-General of Police, all tactical units within the command would be streamlined to ensure better coordination, eliminate operational overlaps, and improve accountability. According to him, the restructuring will enhance rapid response capabilities and ensure that operations are intelligence-led and result-oriented.

The Commissioner issued a stern warning against indiscipline and human rights violations, stating that unprofessional conduct by officers would not be tolerated. He stressed that all personnel must operate within the confines of the law and maintain respect in their interactions with the public.

Highlighting a shift towards preventive policing, Oyeniyi said the command would intensify community engagement, expand intelligence gathering, and increase police visibility across the state. He reiterated that security is a collective responsibility, calling on residents to provide timely and credible information to aid law enforcement efforts.

He also acknowledged the support of the Delta State Government, traditional institutions, community leaders, youths, and other stakeholders, noting that collaboration remains key to maintaining peace and order.

Addressing the media, the Commissioner appreciated their role in public enlightenment and expressed optimism about fostering a professional working relationship. He equally charged officers and men of the command to uphold discipline, professionalism, and adherence to the rule of law at all times.

Oyeniyi concluded by reaffirming his commitment to serving the people and ensuring a safer Delta State.
