Police Intensify Crackdown on Drug Abuse After Teen’s Death in Delta
By Chukwunonso Eric, Warri.
The Delta State Police Command has escalated its offensive against drug trafficking and abuse following the tragic death of a 15-year-old boy allegedly linked to the misuse of a controlled substance.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, said the renewed operations are part of sustained, intelligence-driven efforts to dismantle drug networks, curb substance abuse, and prevent avoidable deaths across the state.
The development follows a recent incident reported at Orogun Division involving a teenager identified as Gift Oberhirhi. According to police accounts, the deceased allegedly consumed 15 tablets of Dexamethasone—reportedly obtained from a friend, Destiny Akpofure, also 15—without medical prescription.
The boy reportedly fell ill shortly after ingesting the medication and died while being rushed for medical attention.
Police operatives responded promptly to the incident, visited the scene, and evacuated the body to the General Hospital Mortuary in Orogun for autopsy. The suspect has since been taken into custody, while investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the case.
The Command described the incident as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with the illegal distribution and misuse of drugs, particularly among young people. Authorities warned that the growing trend of substance abuse poses significant public safety risks and is often linked to other criminal activities, including cultism and violence.
Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi John Oyeniyi, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, noting that decisive measures are being implemented to tackle drug-related crimes across Delta State.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and report cases of drug peddling, abuse, and other suspicious activities to the nearest police station, emphasizing that community cooperation is vital in combating the menace.
The Police Command reiterated its determination to bring perpetrators involved in the illegal sale and distribution of drugs to justice, while intensifying efforts to protect vulnerable groups from the dangers of substance abuse.
