Foremost Niger Delta philanthropist and Chairman of the Delta State Mini Football Association, Mulade Sheriff, has arrived in Portugal alongside the President of the Mini Football Association of Nigeria, Datti Umar Yusuf, to observe one of the world’s largest grassroots football tournaments.
The duo is attending the ongoing IBERCUP 2026, a globally recognized youth competition featuring over 400 teams from more than 30 countries, with participants aged between 10 and 18 years.
Speaking during the visit, Mulade—who also serves as Vice President of the Nigeria Mini Football Association—said the trip is aimed at acquiring valuable insights to strengthen youth football development initiatives in Nigeria, particularly through his Africa 4 Peace Sports Academy.
He expressed admiration for the organization and scale of the tournament, noting that it provides a vital platform for young talents to showcase their skills in a professional and scout-friendly environment.
“It’s beautiful and inspiring to see young players from different parts of the world compete at this level. This kind of exposure creates opportunities for them to be discovered and nurtured,” he said.
Mulade also highlighted the participation of four Nigerian teams, mostly from the northern region, commending their performance and level of exposure. According to him, such international engagements give players a competitive edge and broaden their development.
He called on stakeholders and political office holders in the Niger Delta to invest more in grassroots sports, emphasizing its potential to create employment, reduce youth restiveness, and boost tourism in the region.
The 2026 edition of the IBERCUP is being hosted in Portugal, drawing global attention to youth football development and international sports collaboration.
