BREAKING: Gbaramatu Begins 7-day Amaseikumor Festival
By Monday Peters, Abuja
The Gbaramatu Kingdom has launched its annual Amaseikumor festival, a 7-day celebration of worship, culture, and community. “Amaseikumor” means “no evil should befall the community” in the local Ijaw dialect. The festival honors ancestors, thanks to divinities for harvests, and showcases Gbaramatu’s rich customs.
Festivities kicked off with community clean-up and a free medical clinic, followed by a grand masquerade parade. Expect traditional dances, art exhibitions, and cultural performances highlighting the community’s heritage. The Pere of Gbaramatu Kingdom, His Imperial Majesty Oboro-Gbaraun II, says the festival promotes Ijaw unity and peace, drawing together locals and the diaspora.
A cleansing ceremony seeks protection and blessings from deities. Dignitaries, tourists, and culture-lovers are expected. The festival celebrates culture and drives local economic growth, attracting visitors to experience Gbaramatu’s traditions and hospitality.
Stakeholders in the kingdom, emphasised the significance of the Amaseikumor festival in promoting unity and peace among the Ijaw nation. They added that the festival has become a unifying factor, bringing together Ijaw sons and daughters from home and abroad.
“The Amaseikumor festival is not only a celebration of culture but also a significant economic driver for the local community, with visitors flocking to the kingdom to experience the rich traditions and hospitality of the Gbaramatu people”, the Stakeholders maintained.
