The Delta State Police Command has recorded a significant breakthrough in its ongoing fight against kidnapping and violent crimes, following a coordinated operation that led to the rescue of two victims and the death of two suspected kidnappers.
The operation, carried out in the early hours of Thursday, was executed by operatives of the Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber-Crime Squad in collaboration with the military, under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi.
According to a press statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the joint team acted on credible intelligence to track suspected kidnappers to their hideout along the Obulu-Uku Power Line axis. The suspects were linked to a recent kidnapping incident in Ibusa and Enu-Ani Mega City, Ogwashi-Uku.
Police sources revealed that upon sighting the advancing operatives, the suspects opened fire, prompting a gun battle. The security team responded decisively, leading to the rescue of two female victims held in captivity.
During the exchange, two members of the kidnapping syndicate sustained fatal injuries. They were later confirmed dead at a medical facility where they had been taken for treatment.
Items recovered at the scene include an AK-47 rifle, 19 rounds of ammunition, and a sum of ₦4.2 million, believed to be part of ransom proceeds collected from victims.
Security operatives have since launched a combing operation in the surrounding bushes to apprehend fleeing members of the gang and recover additional weapons.
Commending the bravery and professionalism of the operatives, CP Oyeniyi also praised the support of the military, stressing that inter-agency collaboration remains vital in combating violent crimes.
He reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to assist security agencies in crime prevention and detection.
