The Delta State Police Command has announced the establishment of a specialised Violent Complaint Response Unit (VCRU) alongside a comprehensive reorganisation of its tactical formations, in a move aimed at strengthening operational efficiency, discipline, and accountability.

The initiative, which aligns with directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, is being implemented under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the newly established VCRU is designed to respond swiftly to violent and high-risk incidents, including threats to life, grievous assault, and domestic violence. The unit will serve as a rapid response and coordination platform, working closely with divisional commands and tactical teams to ensure timely and professional intervention.

As part of its rollout, selected personnel assigned to the unit underwent a three-day intensive retraining programme. Addressing the officers during the training, the Commissioner of Police charged them to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights in the discharge of their duties.

The training programme featured a series of lectures, including sessions led by the Command’s Legal Department, which focused on legal frameworks, the use of force, and compliance with existing laws. Officers were also retrained in arms handling, musketry, and the lawful use of firearms, with emphasis on restraint, responsibility, and operational safety.

Police authorities stated that the reforms are part of broader efforts to deepen professional policing, rebuild public trust, and ensure swift and effective responses to violent incidents. The Commissioner warned that acts of negligence, misconduct, or human rights violations would not be tolerated under the new structure.

To ensure seamless implementation, all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and heads of tactical units have been directed to provide full support to the VCRU and treat all related cases with urgency and in line with established procedures.

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state, urging residents to promptly report incidents of violence through official police channels. It emphasized its resolve to deliver efficient, responsive, and people-centred policing throughout Delta State.
