Delta Police Launch Probe Into Viral Assault Allegation Involving Woman
By Chukwunonso Eric, Warri.
The Delta State Police Command has commenced an investigation into a viral video circulating on social media that alleges the assault of a woman by suspected police officers.
The video, which has gained traction on platforms including X (formerly Twitter), shows the victim recounting her experience, claiming she was subjected to over forty strokes of cane by officers.
In response, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, has ordered an immediate and comprehensive probe into the incident. According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, preliminary steps are already underway to verify the claims and identify the officers allegedly involved.
“The matter has been referred to the appropriate investigative unit for discreet handling, while efforts are ongoing to ensure that all personnel implicated are identified and brought to account,” the statement said.
The Command has called on the victim and the activist who shared the video to come forward and assist with the investigation by providing vital information that could aid in identifying those responsible.
Reaffirming its stance, the Police Command strongly condemned all forms of assault, brutality, and abuse against citizens, noting that such actions are inconsistent with the ethics and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Commissioner of Police emphasized that any officer found culpable would face decisive disciplinary action in line with the provisions of the Police Act and other relevant regulations. He further stressed that professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights remain central to policing under his leadership.
The Command also assured the victim of confidentiality, protection, and full institutional support throughout the investigative process.
Members of the public with relevant information, eyewitness accounts, or additional video evidence have been urged to come forward to assist ongoing inquiries. The victim is encouraged to contact the Command through the Office of the Police Public Relations Officer or the Complaint Response Unit via the designated helplines.
The Police reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice and maintaining public trust through transparency and accountability.
