The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest and transfer of a police officer involved in the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.

The Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the incident, describing it as an extra-judicial killing and a clear violation of established policing standards. The shooting occurred on April 26, 2026, during an operation by officers attached to the Area Command in Effurun.

According to the Command, operatives had acted on credible intelligence from members of the public indicating that the deceased was allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition. Police officers were deployed to apprehend the suspect; however, the officer leading the team, Nuhu Usman, reportedly discharged his firearm in breach of operational guidelines, resulting in the suspect’s death.

Authorities noted that the officer’s actions contravened Force Order 237 as well as the Standard Operating Procedures of the Nigeria Police Force.

Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police directed the immediate arrest of the officer. He was subsequently transferred to the State Headquarters in Asaba, queried, and later moved to the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja. The officer is expected to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee, which is currently in session, for further disciplinary action and possible prosecution.

The Command reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law, respect for human rights, and accountability within the Force. It emphasized a zero-tolerance stance on misconduct, recklessness, and extra-judicial actions by its personnel.

CP Oyeniyi extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that justice would be pursued. He also appealed to residents to remain calm and law-abiding while investigations and disciplinary processes continue.

The statement was issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, on behalf of the Delta State Police Command.
