Delta Police Arrest Wanted Cultist, Recover Four Locally Made Firearms in Jesse

The Delta State Police Command has recorded another major breakthrough in its ongoing campaign against cultism with the arrest of a suspected notorious cultist and the recovery of four locally fabricated firearms in Jesse, Ethiope West Local Government Area of the state.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the suspect, Oghenebuba Mamatime, 28, who is allegedly a member of the Eiye Confraternity and on the Command’s wanted list, was arrested through a joint operation involving operatives of the Jesse Division and vigilant community youths.

Police said the arrest followed a complaint from a victim who alleged that he was shot by the suspect. Acting on credible intelligence, security operatives apprehended the suspect on July 21, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m.

During a search, officers recovered three locally made pistols and one locally made single-barrel gun from the suspect.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim had reportedly withdrawn from cult activities, a decision that angered the suspect. Police said an argument allegedly broke out when the suspect attempted to force the victim back into the Eiye Confraternity, resulting in the shooting.

The suspect remains in police custody while investigations continue.

Commending the successful operation, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, praised the collaboration between police operatives and community youths, describing it as a vital strategy in combating cultism and other violent crimes.

The Police Commissioner urged residents to sustain the partnership with security agencies and encouraged community members to extend their support to efforts against kidnapping, drug abuse, and other criminal activities. He also advised young people across the state to avoid cultism and all forms of criminal association.
