BREAKING: Nollywood Icon Olu Jacobs Dies at 84

Veteran Nigerian actor, film executive and cultural icon, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.

His death was announced by his family on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, in a statement shared on Instagram by his son, Olusoji Jacobs. The family described him as “The Lion of Lufodo” and appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect their privacy during the period of mourning.

Born on July 11, 1942, Olu Jacobs enjoyed a career spanning more than five decades across theatre, television and film. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London and appeared in British television productions and international films, including The Goodies, Till Death Us Do Part, The Dogs of War, Pirates and Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend.

Upon returning to Nigeria, Jacobs became one of Nollywood’s most respected actors, featuring in more than 120 films and memorable television productions, including The Third Eye. Alongside his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, he co-founded the Lufodo Group, which became an important platform for film production, distribution and the training of performers.

His contributions to the creative industry earned him several honours, including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007, the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, and the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011.

Jacobs, who celebrated his 84th birthday in July, had in recent years remained largely out of the public eye amid reports of health challenges. His absence had also led to several false reports of his death, which members of his family and associates repeatedly debunked.

The veteran actor is survived by his wife, Joke Silva, their children and grandchildren. His passing marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in Nigerian entertainment, while his performances, mentorship and contributions to the film industry continue to influence generations of actors and filmmakers.
