By Chukwunonso Eric, Warri.
The Delta State Police Command has arrested four suspects in separate operations targeting cultism and armed robbery in Umunede and Ughelli, recovering seven firearms, 10 live cartridges, two stolen motorcycles and substances suspected to be illicit drugs.
In Umunede, two suspected cultists, identified as 30-year-old Chibuike Ezeji and 22-year-old Ikenna Emeka, were arrested on October 30 following a complaint that Ezeji allegedly threatened a resident with a pistol.
Police operatives, working with members of the Umunede Civilian Anti-Cult Group, raided a residence along the Umunede Expressway allegedly occupied by Ezeji. A search of the premises reportedly yielded a pump-action gun, a locally made cut-to-size gun, three locally made pistols and eight live cartridges.
The operation also led to the recovery of substances suspected to be cannabis and methamphetamine, popularly known as “ice.” The two suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
In a separate operation in Ughelli, operatives of the Commissioner’s Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT) arrested two suspected armed robbers, identified as 22-year-old Peter Emobaye and 29-year-old James Emmanuel.
The suspects were arrested on October 28 during a raid on a suspected criminal hideout in the Ighrovie area, following complaints of armed motorcycle snatching around Stadium Road, Saniko and adjoining areas.
Police said one stolen Qlink motorcycle was recovered during the operation. Following preliminary interrogation, the suspects allegedly led investigators to the residence of their suspected gang leader, identified as Sunny, at Ufuoma Town.
A search of the residence reportedly resulted in the recovery of another stolen Daylong motorcycle, a fabricated Beretta pistol, a locally made shotgun and two live cartridges.
The police said efforts were ongoing to arrest the alleged gang leader and other members of the suspected syndicate.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Samuel Etaifo Erale, reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling cultism, armed robbery and the proliferation of illegal firearms across the state.
Erale also urged members of the public to provide the police with credible and timely information, assuring residents that the command would sustain operations aimed at protecting lives and property in Delta State.
