The Lagos State Police Command has uncovered an indoor cannabis farm allegedly operating inside a residential property in Apapa Lagos, where cannabis plants were being cultivated in cups for eventual sale in the illicit drug market.

Speaking after the discovery, the property manager claimed he allowed a foreigner who was stranded in Nigeria to use the room after the company that brought him into the country ran into difficulties.

He said: “The gentleman here found himself in a fix in Nigeria, and I decided to give him a hand. However, he needed to find a way to go out of the country after the company that brought him had pretty much not worked out for them. They fell on bad times.

“So I said, okay, anything he needs help with, he should let me know. A couple of days later, he came with this idea. I said, well, I hope everything works out well for him. But then again, I found myself here with it.”

The manager denied having any intention of profiting from the operation, describing himself as a businessman who only wanted to help the foreigner.

“I had no intentions to profit from it. I’m a businessman. I just happened to be someone who fell in the hands of trying to help another fellow. That’s it,” he said.

When asked whether the idea to cultivate cannabis came from the foreigner, he confirmed that it did. He also admitted that his involvement was not entirely free, explaining that his job was to manage the property.

He further claimed that the foreigner was handling the process of selling the cannabis when he was caught.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police described the discovery as another breakthrough in the command’s fight against drug abuse and trafficking.

The commissioner urged residents to pay attention to the activities of their neighbours and make efforts to know what goes on within their communities.

The police said investigations are ongoing as they intensify efforts to curb the cultivation and distribution of illicit drugs.
