BURUTU PROTEST: Residents Seize Council Chairman Takeme’s Speedboat, Demand Urgent Hospital Rehabilitation

Residents of Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State on Wednesday intensified their protest over what they described as the deplorable condition of the council’s only government hospital and the alleged neglect of critical infrastructure in the area.

The protesters, who gathered in large numbers, escalated the demonstration by seizing the official speedboat belonging to the Chairman of Burutu Local Government Council, Hon. Julius Takeme.

The development came amid growing frustration among residents over the state of healthcare facilities in the local government headquarters. Protesters accused the council administration of failing to give adequate attention to the hospital, which they described as a critical facility serving residents of the area.

According to the protesters, the poor condition of the hospital has made access to basic healthcare increasingly difficult, with residents allegedly forced to travel elsewhere for treatment or risk losing lives when emergencies occur.

They expressed anger over what they described as years of infrastructural neglect, insisting that the council leadership must urgently address the condition of the hospital and other essential facilities.

The demonstrators also accused the council chairman of poor performance and called for greater accountability in the management of the local government’s resources.

The seizure of the chairman’s speedboat marked a dramatic escalation of the protest, underscoring the depth of the residents’ dissatisfaction and their demand for immediate government intervention.

The protesters appealed to the Delta State Government and other relevant authorities to intervene in the situation, rehabilitate the hospital and restore essential infrastructure in Burutu.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no response from Chairman Julius Takeme addressing the allegations raised by the protesters.
