Using the name of Cross River State deputy governor Peter Odey, scammers have set up X (previously Twitter) sites to deceive gullible citizens.

Following a report in a national daily that cited Odey as having mobilized public support to defend the suspended minister of humanitarian affairs and poverty alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, over the N585 million saga, Odey’s press secretary, Fred Abua, raised an alarm on Thursday.

“He doesn’t have a Twitter account”, he stated in his statement.

He added “This thing is run by scammers. His Excellency is only on Facebook for now!

“These impostors aren’t stopping. We have written disclaimers but they keep opening more and more new social media accounts, claiming to be one high-profile personality or the other. The end is just to defraud the unsuspecting public.”

Abua maintained that since the state government has not taken a stand, his boss was not permitted to make any public remarks regarding the current inquiry into the aforementioned N585 million.

The particular post on X credited to Odey read: “Dear Dr Betta Edu, you shall come out strong! We’re with you. I trust Mr President to do a thorough investigation on this matter. Betta Edu is Better.”
