Delta CP Moves to Ease Asaba–Onitsha Expressway Gridlock, Meets Security Agencies, Contractors
By Chukwunonso Eric, Warri.
The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel E. Erale, psc, mnips, has initiated measures to address the persistent traffic congestion along the Asaba–Onitsha Expressway, particularly around the Niger Bridge corridor, as increased traffic is expected ahead of the festive season.
CP Erale on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, convened a strategic meeting with heads of relevant security and traffic management agencies and representatives of contractors handling the ongoing road construction along the expressway.
The meeting, held at the Delta State Police Headquarters in Asaba, was attended by the State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Commandant Chinedu Fabian Igbo; the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Corps Commander Charles E. Edem; a representative of the Director-General of the Delta State Traffic Management Authority (DETSMA); and representatives of the construction contractors.
The Commissioner expressed concern over the difficulties being experienced by motorists as a result of the ongoing roadworks and called for coordinated measures to improve traffic flow and minimise delays.
He directed that traffic personnel be strategically deployed to critical points, while urging prompt removal of broken-down vehicles that could worsen congestion.
CP Erale also called on the contractors to provide adequate warning signs, clearly marked diversions and safe passage through construction zones. He stressed the need for contractors to maintain close coordination with traffic management agencies throughout the construction period.
The Commissioner reaffirmed the Police Command’s commitment to protecting road users and supporting measures aimed at ensuring smoother vehicular movement and public safety along the Asaba–Onitsha Expressway.
The meeting is expected to strengthen coordination among the relevant agencies and construction contractors as efforts continue to ease the traffic situation during the ongoing rehabilitation works.
