Delta CSOs Condemn Rising Wave of Political Violence, Begin Stakeholders Engagement Ahead Of 2027

• Urges security agencies to be impartial, and ensure a peaceful atmosphere for political participation

The Delta Civil Society Coalition has condemned the rising wave of political violence in Delta State and announced the commencement of a statewide fact-finding and stakeholder engagement initiative to address the trend ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement read by the convener, Maxwell Ogedegbe, Esq, Comr. Austin Ozobo – National Secretary, CONFAB, Prince Ukuanovwe Godstime OJ – State Director, CAHR Delta State and others at the press conference held on Tuesday in Effurun, Delta State appealed with Stakeholders to provide a level playing grounds for all political parties to carry out their political activities in the Delta State.

According to the statement signed by its leadership on Tuesday, expressed deep concern over what it described as “disturbing and unacceptable” disruptions of political consultations, meetings, and campaign activities across the state.

The coalition specifically cited recent attacks linked to political consultations in Usiefrun, Ughelli South LGA; double attacks in Oria, Abraka and Effurun, Uvwie LGA; and incidents in Oshimili South LGA.

It noted that several persons were reportedly injured in attacks allegedly targeting consultation teams of some political parties.

“These allegations require proper, independent and impartial investigation rather than political rhetoric or counter-allegations,” the Coalition stated.

According to the Coalition, the recurrence of such incidents, regardless of the political party involved, risks heightening political tension, eroding public confidence, and creating an atmosphere of fear.

“The recurrence of such incidents has the potential to undermine public confidence and create an atmosphere of fear ahead of the 2027 general elections,” it said.

The group stressed that citizens and political organisations are constitutionally entitled to assemble, associate, and participate freely in the political process.

To address the situation, the Coalition said it has resolved to embark on fact-finding visits and broad stakeholder engagements.

“Our intervention is not targeted at any political party or individual. Our sole objective is to protect the democratic space and ensure that every citizen and political organisation can participate without intimidation, violence or unlawful interference,” the statement said.

The Coalition called on political actors and their supporters to exercise restraint and reject violence. It also urged security agencies to remain professional, impartial, and proactive in securing political activities.

It further invited civil society organisations, human rights defenders, and community-based groups to support the initiative.

“Delta State must not become a theatre for political violence. We must collectively protect the democratic space and ensure that the 2027 political process is peaceful, inclusive and credible,” the Coalition added.
