Four Nigerian Soldiers Killed, Seven Injured in Sokoto Ambush
By Sunday Onye, Senior correspondent
At least four Nigerian soldiers were fatally shot, and seven others sustained injuries in an ambush by gunmen in Gudu Local Government Area of Sokoto State. Hon. Umar MaiKano Balle, the Sole Administrator of the local government, confirmed the incident in Sokoto on Sunday.
According to Balle, the soldiers were killed on Saturday night when they encountered an ambush set by bandits. Seven other military personnel suffered varying degrees of gunshot injuries in the attack and are currently receiving treatment at the emergency ward of the Gudu General Hospital. They may be referred to the Usmanu Danfodiyo Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, for further care.
The bandits also set two operational vehicles of the security personnel ablaze. This incident follows a similar attack in the same area last week, where gunmen suspected to be terrorists killed eight farmers and rustled over 1,260 livestock.
Balle acknowledged that the attack was a response to the synergy and determination between the council management and security operatives to combat banditry in the area. He confirmed that relative normalcy had returned to the area after the deployment of additional security personnel.
