How AI Could Cause the Catastrophic Death of a Billion People — Billionaire Bill Gates Warns

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has warned that artificial intelligence could become powerful enough to cause catastrophic loss of life if it falls into the hands of people with harmful intentions.

Speaking in an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, Gates said AI could potentially contribute to events resulting in up to a billion deaths. He argued that the combination of advanced AI tools and people with malicious intentions could create dangers unlike those posed by previous technologies.

Gates also said AI companies should not be left to regulate themselves. He called for governments, politicians and law enforcement agencies to establish mandatory safeguards and monitoring systems for the technology.

His concerns come amid growing debate within the technology industry over the potential dangers of increasingly powerful AI. Some researchers and employees at leading AI companies have raised concerns that the race to develop more advanced systems could expose humanity to serious risks.

Among the catastrophic scenarios discussed by experts are AI being used to trigger nuclear conflict, facilitate the development of dangerous diseases, or cause other large-scale destruction. However, researchers remain divided over how realistic some of these scenarios are.

A RAND report cited in the discussion found that AI currently could not cause the use of nuclear weapons because of safeguards surrounding nuclear command systems. The researchers warned that the risk could change if AI becomes integrated into nuclear decision-making systems or gains unauthorized access to them.

Gates previously warned that increasingly powerful AI could also be exploited for cyber attacks, fraud and disinformation targeting critical systems such as hospitals, financial institutions, power grids and government networks.
