By Micheal Chukwuebuka
A University of Benin (UNIBEN) undergraduate was shot and killed inside his JLK Mercedes Benz while driving out of the campus’s main gate.
The student, whose identity has yet to be released, was attacked on Sunday evening at the main entrance of the Ugbowo campus. Eyewitnesses reported that masked gunmen fired at close range before fleeing the scene.
According to sources, the victim had finished his exams in the Political Science department approximately one hour prior to the attack.
Two other occupants of the same vehicle who survived the shooting were rushed to the University of Benin Health Care centre.
As of press time, officers from the Ugbowo Divisional Police Headquarters were at the scene removing the victim’s remains.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), SP Emmanuel, described the situation as still “too sketchy” and said an official statement had not yet been issued.
In a separate incident, another student was allegedly chased with a machete near the Social Science Lecture Theatre on Saturday but managed to escape unharmed.
