How maritime varsity student, staff drowned in a boat mishap in Delta

A student and caterer of Nigerian Maritime University, Okerenkoko, Warri South west local government area of Delta state has drowned in a boat mishap.

The incident occurred on Friday when a commercial boat conveying passengers capsized and drowned a student and caterer in the school in Warri River.

However, the corpse of the deceased persons had been recovered by local divers.

A top official of the university who pleaded annomity, said the boat driver had been arrested and handed over to the police.

The official narrated, “The deceased boarded a commercial boat against the school rule that students and staff should only make use of school-owned boats and any other provided by management to ferry students to Warri.

“It was on their way going that the boat capsized. Unfortunately, one of our students and caterer drowned.
“We don’t know exactly what happened, but the boat driver is already answering questions from the police.”

The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe confirmed the boat mishap when contacted. But declined about the identity of the deceased persons.
