The embattled former bank staff John Lyon Ewa, who was arrested on allegation of kidnapping during the weekend by the Bayelsa police command said he wasn’t involved in the kidnapping business but only misled to act as a pointer to the kidnappers.

It was learnt Lyon Owa was paraded alongside three other members of his gang in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State.

The police source said he was traced to Abuja from Bayelsa following the kidnapping of his former boss identified as Danjuma Emeije, in Yenagoa.

It would be recalled that Danjuma Emeije, a bank manager, was abducted in June 2022, and was released after a ransom of 50 million naira was paid.

While being paraded, the kidnap suspect Lyon said he was not into kidnapping business, and that his mother was in the hospital when the operation was carried out. He said that what he did was just to identify the house of the victim to the kidnappers, and that he was paid 1.5 million naira for that.

His words, “I’m not part of it (operations), I was misled to show them where this person is. I wasn’t involved in it. I’m not in the business (kidnapping), I didn’t approach Danjuma, I only went there to open an account.”

While answering questions on the role he played in the kidnapping of another victim identified as Hakeem, he claimed that he was given 3.5 million naira for being involved in the operation.

“I didn’t play any role in Hakeem’s kidnap. I just showed them his house. We were driving and I pointed to the house. It was my former boss’s house, that was it.”

Many expressed surprise over the arrest of John Lyon Ewa because he was known for flaunting wealth on social media, and encouraging others to work hard.

However, this should be a lesson to others not to feel intimidated or pressured by the wealth of others they see online or in their environment because they don’t know how those people made their money.
