The acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has condemned the disturbing incident where a police team ran a vehicle over a citizen on Thursday, June 29, 2023, in Ekpoma, Edo State.

The IGP has directed the erring policemen, who have been in detention in Edo State, to report to the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Monday for further action.

He has also called on members of the public, particularly the people of Ekpoma, to remain calm as the present leadership of the NPF will not condone such an act of unprofessionalism and illegality.

The incident reportedly occurred when the police team accosted the citizen and attempted to search his phone. The citizen refused to allow the search, and the police officers then handcuffed him and tried to take him to their station. A crowd of bystanders intervened, and the police officers drove away, running over the citizen in the process.

The IGP has said that the police officers’ actions were “grossly unprofessional and illegal” and that they will be held accountable for their actions. He has also assured the public that the NPF is committed to upholding the rule of law and protecting the rights of citizens.

The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with many people calling for the police officers to be brought to justice. The IGP’s swift condemnation of the incident and his decision to take action against the officers is a positive step, but it remains to be seen what the outcome of the investigation will be.
