JUST IN: Dozens missing in boat accident in Niger

A devastating boat accident occurred in Niger State’s Mokwa Local Government Area on October 1, 2024, leaving over 150 passengers missing. The boat, carrying approximately 300 people, mostly women and children, capsized while traveling from Mundi Community to Gbajibo Community for the Maulid festival ¹.

 

Rescue efforts are underway, with the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) coordinating operations alongside local divers, volunteers, and the State Ministry of Transport. Thankfully, over 150 people have been rescued alive so far.

 

The Director General of NSEMA, Alhaji Abdullahi Baba-Arah, confirmed the incident and assured that the search and rescue operation is ongoing, with updates to follow as more survivors are located.

 

“This tragic incident highlights the importance of water safety measures and emergency preparedness. Our thoughts are with the affected families and communities,” he added.
