JUST IN: Gun-toting assassins kill LP senatorial candidate, others in Enugu

Pandemonium as the Labour Party senatorial candidate for Enugu East Senatorial District, Prof Oyibo Chukwu was reportedly murdered on Wednesday evening.

Congress gathered that he was set ablaze alongside other party members late Wednesday evening at Amaechi Awkunanaw, Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State.

This came barely 48 hours to the February 25, general election in the country.

Source said they were accosted by unidentified persons while driving in a Sienna vehicle and set the vehicle ablaze, killing five occupants.

“It is saddening; we learnt they were burnt alongside the campaign vehicle. I can’t speak further because I’m not his family member,” the source said.

In a related development, a campaign vehicle belonging to a House of Representatives member, Hon. Offor Chukwuegbo was also set ablaze within the same axis by suspected gunmen. It was learned Chukwuegbo is the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, candidate for the Enugu North/South Federal Constituency.

However, the casualty figure is still sketchy apart from the driver of the campaign vehicle who was reportedly killed on the spot.

The police could not be reached for comment at the time of filing this report.
