One Killed, Five Injured as Violence Erupts at NDC Supporters’ Rally in Asaba
By Chukwunonso Eric, Warri.
The Delta State Police Command has launched an investigation into a violent clash at a political rally organised by the Obedient/OK Movement in support of the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Asaba, leaving one person dead and five others injured.
The incident occurred on Saturday, November 7, 2026, along Nnebisi Road, Asaba, during a road procession by supporters of the political movement.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed in a statement that the Command had received intelligence about the possibility of violence before the rally and subsequently invited the organisers to a security meeting.
According to the police, the organisers were warned about the identified security threats and advised to avoid an open road procession in favour of a designated venue where adequate security could be provided. However, the organisers allegedly ignored the advice and proceeded with the procession.
The Command said the violence occurred at about 12:15 p.m., resulting in one fatality and injuries to five other persons. The identities of the victims had yet to be established as of the time of the statement.
Police operatives reportedly mobilised to the scene after receiving a distress call and evacuated the injured victims to a hospital for medical attention. Security was subsequently reinforced in the area to prevent further violence and restore public order.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel E. Erale, condemned the incident and assured residents that a thorough and impartial investigation would be conducted to establish the circumstances surrounding the clash and identify those responsible.
While affirming the right of political parties to organise lawful campaigns and political activities, Erale advised parties and their supporters to avoid road processions in the interest of public safety.
He also urged political organisers to liaise with the Police ahead of rallies and other public gatherings to ensure adequate security arrangements.
The Command appealed to members of the public with useful information about the incident to contact the Police through 09155570008 or 09155570007, assuring residents of its commitment to protecting lives and maintaining peace across Delta State.
