PDP Greets Deltans, Says Party Remains ‘Home Of Democracy’ Despite Defections
By Osaro Michael, Benin
The Secretary of the Pro-wike, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Delta State Chapter, Alaowei Cleric Ebikonbowei, Esq., has commended Deltans for their “unwavering support” and “unflinching dedication” to the party, urging them to keep faith in the PDP despite recent political realignments in the state.
In a goodwill message issued on Wednesday, Ebikonbowei said the people of Delta State deserved commendation for standing with the PDP “through thick and thin” in the party’s 26-year history in the state.
“Our Party has journeyed through thick and thin in the threshold of history, but Deltans, in spite of the hiccups that appeared to be a cog in the wheel of progress at a point in time, have never shown weakness to the ideals of the Party,” Ebikonbowei stated.
Addressing the wave of defections that have recently affected the PDP within government circles in Delta, the state secretary said the grassroots base remains solid.
“Even with the gale of defections that have hit the PDP at the government circle in the State, the Delta people continued to show empathy and faith in our dear Party,” he said.
He maintained that the PDP remains “a viable political platform, second to none in the State,” noting that from 1999 to April 2025, the party “continued to provide good governance to the people of Delta State.”
“The people’s faith in the Party has always been rekindled through policy directions that had given succour to the yearnings of the governed,” he added.
Ebikonbowei said the PDP remains “alive, active and stronger than ever” to champion the political interests of Deltans. He called on residents and Nigerians at large to “rekindle their faith” in the party, describing it as “Deltans’ home of democracy.”
For members who had left the party, he said: “Our doors are still open. We are ready to welcome you with open hands.”
He also assured politicians seeking a platform that the PDP would guarantee internal democracy.
“As for those that want to use our platform to propagate their political course, be rest assured that you are on the right track. Democracy thrives in the PDP and we shall surely provide a platform that engenders the much anticipated internal democracy,” Ebikonbowei stated.
The PDP scribe pointed to the current leadership of the party in the state as a reason for renewed confidence. He said the party is now led by “a person of impeccable character, a seasoned administrator and a legal luminary” in the person of State Chairman Dr. Peter A. Mrakpor, SAN.
He also described the leader of the party in the state, His Excellency Deacon Kingsley Burutu Otuaro, as “an exceptional and God-fearing leader” and “a detribalized man whose vision is to engender true democracy in the Party.”
The PDP has governed Delta State since 1999. The state has witnessed notable defections in the past year, with several government appointees and elected officials switching parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
But Ebikabowei said the party is currently repositioning its structures at state and LGA levels.
